My journey as a physician and neuropsychiatrist has been profoundly shaped by two remarkable countries: India, my homeland, and the United States, where I have built my career. It is like one is the heart and the other is the soul and both make me the person I am. In fact, each has played an integral role in shaping who I am today, influencing my values, perspectives, and professional path. And the recent visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the United States was a similarly significant moment, further deepening ties between our two nations.
The Roots: Growing Up in India
Growing up in India was a formative experience that laid the groundwork for my future endeavors. I was born into a family that valued education and hard work. My early years were filled with rich cultural traditions and a strong sense of commitment to help others and the society. And this inspired me to pursue a career in medicine.
My education at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi was a transformative chapter in my life. The rigorous training, combined with exposure to a diverse patient population, taught me the importance of empathy and resilience. I learned not only the technical aspects of medicine but also to approach healthcare with compassion. Each patient I encountered brought unique stories and challenges, reinforcing my belief in the power of human connection.
In India, the spirit of community was ever-present. I participated in various outreach programs, witnessing firsthand the challenges faced by underserved populations. These experiences ignited my passion for mental health, motivating me to advocate for those who often went unheard.
The Leap: Embracing Opportunities in the US
I was filled with a sense of excitement and apprehension as I crossed the shores to the United States for the very first time. Unquestionably, my horizon was bound to be altered, if not broadened, by the oceanic opportunities I was about to face. Nowhere is this better manifested than in the US health system, steeped in a reputation for innovative and cutting edge research.
In this new environment, I found myself immersed in cutting-edge practices and a collaborative spirit that encouraged learning and growth. Working alongside esteemed colleagues allowed me to deepen my expertise in my field, and I was introduced to resources that enriched my practice. The emphasis on evidence-based medicine opened my eyes to new methodologies and treatment options, enabling me to better serve my patients.
The opportunities in the US extended beyond just professional growth. I found a diverse community of fellow healthcare professionals who shared a commitment to improving lives. This collaboration fostered friendships and mentorships that have been invaluable throughout my career. I learned from my peers and also had the privilege of sharing my own experiences, particularly regarding cultural competency in patient care.
Bridging Two Worlds
The contrast between my life in India and my experiences in the U.S. has profoundly shaped my identity. In fact, the collective experience from both the places has helped me cultivate a unique perspective as a healthcare professional. And I continue to strive to bridge these two worlds. I understand the importance of cultural context in mental health care, recognizing that each patient’s background influences, their experiences and needs. My Indian upbringing instilled in me a deep respect for the diverse narratives that shape patient experiences, while my US training equipped me with the tools to address these complexities effectively.
A Life of Gratitude
Looking back on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities I have received in both India and the US. India provided me with a strong foundation, rich values, and the determination to make a difference. The US opened doors to advancements that transformed my practice and enhanced my ability to impact lives.
Final Thought
My life so far has been a testament to the power of resilience, learning, and fostering cross-cultural connections. The journey from India to the US has shaped me into the person I am—passionate about mental health and dedicated to serving all.
